St Paul’s Churchyard Appeal

Come and work in God’s Acre!

We have a beautiful, well-used church surrounded by a large and interesting churchyard. Basic maintenance is provided by SStaffs Council but much ongoing work is required throughout the year as weeds are no respecters of location! Thanks to the real dedication of few local folk our ‘God’s Acre’ is already looking much improved but we need to maintain momentum!
Hence this appeal for further helpers for our Gardening and Conservation team, meeting at church first Wednesday each month at around 11 o’clock and everyone is most welcome. Obvious work includes weeding, pruning, cutting back overgrown vegetation. There are some 850 graves many of which are no longer maintained individually so we hope to expand our effort to include ongoing genealogical research, plus photography as well as some careful TLC. By 2020 we need to generate a complete map of the area so ideas how to achieve this realistically would be welcomed- digital schemes in particular!
The area backs on to open fields and is relatively undisturbed. There may be rare wild blooms or unusual insects to be identified by budding botanists! Likewise there may be ways to encourage more bird life.
Back to gardening: we have some larger tools but you may wish to bring along gloves, secateurs etc. Hot and cold drinks and toilet facilities will be available. Contact our office 01902 791923 (with Answerphone). Email: or just turn up! We look forward to meeting you! Once acquainted other time slots could be agreed.
